Therapy-by-poster at Meta
Hi, I’m Joanna (AKA Jo)…
…I’m a content designer and design strategist with a ton of experience across various disciplines and business spaces. This has helped build the holistic POV I bring to my life and work, and I’m always on the lookout for an opportunity to learn something new (or a new way to learn something old…).
Why I love the UX practice
I’m energized by helping people get where they want to go, and enjoy taking what may seem cryptic, frustrating, and intimidating, and making it clear, simple, and delightful. People shouldn’t have to put up with poor design, deceitful patterns, and overly complex experiences when engaging with the products and services they depend on and which they are often required to use.
Experience
While my experience spans a diversity of roles and disciplines, I’ve spent most of my career creating and building experiences and products through my expertise in design strategy & principles, UX content design, applied story, branding, and voice & narrative. But the UX design world is where I found my career home, purpose, and passion.
Below is a curated overview of my engagements as a content designer/UX writer and other histories—for more about my professional path, check out my LinkedIn profile. I can also send a resume when requested.
-
I joined the company that delivers to customers the joy of eating, and to businesses the resources, services, and tools they need to drive success. I shape and refine new experiences for merchants that enhance customer relationships, drive orders, and optimize for business goals. My workstreams include Merchant portal, CRM tools and resources, Storefront white label app for customers, new loyalty programs, and the new Dx Drive healthcare vertical.
-
Facebook (now Meta Platforms) recruited me in 2018 as a full-time content designer in Menlo Park, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to further evolve my UX design career through the company’s world-class design practice.
I learned so much working with the amazing Meta Design org, UX researchers, and cross-functional teams on ad creation, management, and reporting tools, video experiences, and high-priority compliance work. Teaching a core Design Camp class to new hires was also a major highlight of my time at Meta.
Working on the important 2023 EU Digital Services Act projects inspired my latest design obsession: solving for potential “deceitful patterns” that trick users into doing things they may not want to.

I joined DIRECTV as a vendor via my small business, RubyLane LLC, just before its CTO realized the core set-top box UI needed a major redesign. During the early days of exploration and the UX design disciplines, I honed my design thinking and craft as a content designer/UX writer. Working with new design leadership and teams, I contributed to what would later become DIRECTV’s dedicated UX practice, the Experience Design Studio (XDS). Foundational and tactical projects I led included user flows, terminology and language standards, brand voice, AX mandates, user guides, and more for the DIRECTV entertainment experience across all devices/platforms.
I also worked on special TV apps and promos for seasonal offerings like NFL Sunday Ticket®, Grand Slam Tennis, the 2016 Presidential Election, and other special projects.

I was hired on a long-term contract via RubyLane LLC to develop content for, produce, and launch Sony’s MovieIQ app, a special connected feature on selected Blu-ray titles. MovieIQ was a unique, innovative offering at the time, delivering timecode-based cast highlights and other contextual info that viewers could invoke about the scene they were watching. It predated video streaming and other peripheral apps/features like Shazam and Amazon Prime’s XRay.
I created and produced all app content including UX messaging and user guidance, as well as the app’s main, featured content, i.e., scene-based trivia, cast & crew filmographies, and music info. I also hired and managed freelance writers, metadata and localization vendors, and a QA team that fact-checked and tested content and the app for each title.
My final MovieIQ tally:
• 85+ Sony tentpole & library movie titles
• Showtime’s Dexter S4/S5 (26 eps)
• Starz Spartacus S1 (13 eps) -
After working in the entertainment and technology industries for several years as both an FTE and contractor, I founded RubyLane LLC, an LA-based multidiscipline, creative pod covering design strategy and thinking, product development, production, UX, brand story/naming, and more, across a range of business spaces. While the focus was mostly on entertainment, media, and technology, RL has also partnered with clients on fashion, luxury, and hospitality projects.
Clients:
• AT&T/DIRECTV Experience Design Studio (XDS) • Sony Digital Works/ DADC • Sony Pictures Television International • Disney Interactive Media Group/Mobile Games • Trailer Park Agency • Sony Electronics / LA Design Center • Proctor & Gamble Beauty Brands • VIVA Magazine (Canada) • Guthy-Renker • + others
